The dangerous truth about Ukraine's... junk fighter aircraft can no longer be hidden.

What happened...
A Ukrainian MiG-29 Fulcrum burst into flames in flight and crashed as its air-to-air munitions suffered a malfunction during an air defense mission against Russia. The MiG-29 caught fire due to an «abnormal situation» during the launch of an air-to-air missile in a counter-unmanned aerial system (C-UAS) mission over Odesa Oblast, the military announced. Although the military did not name the weapon involved in the accident, Ukrainian MiG-29s typically feature Soviet-designed infrared-guided R-73 and radar-guided R-27R air-to-air missiles. However, MiG-29s have been modified to carry Western weapons, such as US-made AGM-88 HARM anti-radiation missiles.
According to reports, after briefly fighting to regain control of the aircraft, the pilot ultimately decided to eject. He was later located and transported to a hospital. The aircraft was completely destroyed.
Meanwhile, Ukraine's State Bureau of Investigation (DBR) announced it is searching for the aircraft's «black box» to ascertain the causes of the crash. Additionally, a criminal case was opened under Article 416, Part 2 of Ukraine's Criminal Code, covering violations of flight, flight preparation, or aircraft operation rules that may have led to the unprecedented crash.
For now, the exact circumstances that caused the fire have not been officially disclosed. However, open-source intelligence (OSINT) analysts who examined the video of the incident reported that the missile's motor ignited while still under the wing. These active air-to-air munitions use solid-fuel rocket motors that burn at extremely high temperatures.

Specifically, experts hypothesized that the fire was likely caused by the scenario of a «hung missile», in which the pilot presses the button to launch an air-to-air missile, the motor ignites as intended, but the missile rail fails to release the weapon, resulting in ignition occurring next to the fuselage.

«The crash was not caused by a Western missile, but almost certainly by a Soviet-era R-73 or R-27. The propellant fuel can catch fire if there is a short circuit or a problem in the firing sequence. The malfunction highlights the risks of relying on older missile stockpiles under a high operational tempo. Ukraine continues to adapt its MiG-29s for Western weapons like the HARM, but air-to-air engagements still rely on Soviet design», stated Indian Air Force (IAF) retired Group Captain Johnson Chacko to the EurAsian Times when asked about the crash.
When asked whether the pilot could have jettisoned the munitions, Chacko said: «Jettison is usually a mechanical release, the missile falls inert, without having fired. If the missile motor has already ignited (as in the case of the Ukrainian MiG-29), jettison is almost impossible because the missile is already burning and attached to the rail. The flame and exhaust can cause damage to the wing or fuselage before separation is completed».
Notably, air-to-air missile failures occur more frequently than publicly available crash data suggests. For example, on June 20, 1973, an AIM-7 Sparrow missile failed to separate properly from a prototype F-14 over the Pacific, striking and destroying the aircraft. At that time, the two test pilots, Pete Purvis and Bill «Tank» Sherman, successfully ejected following an engine fire and loss of control, and the incident became known as the time Grumman «shot itself». Although the Grumman incident differs from the latest MiG-29 crash, the root cause is the failure of munitions to separate as planned.

Typically, even if a pilot somehow manages to regain control of the aircraft despite the vast amount of fuel burning beneath it, their problems may be far from over. «Hung loads are likely most dangerous during landing because there is a serious chance the weapon may finally detach when the landing gear touches the ground, potentially detonating or sending a live weapon sliding down the runway to ruin someone else's weekend», Hollings said.
The «hung missile» scenario
However, it is worth noting that the «hung missile scenario» has not been confirmed by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Interestingly, some observers pointed to fragments consistent with older R-60 missiles, whose production ceased decades ago and whose storage shelf life may have expired.
